Ricohflex Lens Adjustment

Picked up a Ricohflex Model VII and it’s in pretty good shape, but the lenses were very stiff. The only way to fix it was to disassemble the gears, clean the old grease off, and then relubricate them. After that the taking lens and the viewing lens need to be synced up. The best way to do it would by using a ground glass, but it can also be done using waxed paper.

Using an old roll of backing paper cut a hole and tape in a piece of waxed paper.

Load the paper as you would with a roll of film.

Mount the camera on a tripod (in landscape to keep the door open), and set it to bulb. Focus on infinity, and using a cable release lock the shutter open with the aperture wide open. You may need to use a magnifying glass to make sure it’s in focus.

Check the focus on the ground glass, and make sure the image is also sharp at infinity.

If it isn’t remove the viewing gear (3 set screws) without moving the taking lens, and adjust it accordingly. Once both lenses are focused reinstall the viewing gear at the appropriate location.

The gears should move freely, and you should be able to achieve focus at infinity with both lenses.
